What is MARI Kids?

MARI Kids is the pediatric-centered branch of MARI, advocating for the health, safety, and well-being of children through research and education. From newborns to adolescents, MARI Kids aims to improve outcomes by identifying gaps in care, supporting child health research, and offering parents and guardians practical tools to navigate the healthcare system.

We believe that every child and their caregivers deserves a safe and informed healthcare experience, MARI Kids is here to support though providing research on topics impacting healthcare issues regarding children.

What is Mismedicine in Pediatrics?

Mismedicine is a broad, inclusive term coined by Dr. Pooya Beigi to describe any medical act, whether diagnostic, therapeutic, communicative, or systemic, that results in harm, inefficiency, or a failure to meet the standard of care. Unlike narrower terms such as misdiagnosis or malpractice, Mismedicine captures the full spectrum of medical errors, oversights, and institutional gaps that negatively impact patient outcomes.

In pediatrics, mismedicine may occur due to missed symptoms, delayed diagnoses due to atypical presentations, incorrect medication dosing based on age or weight, incorrect diagnosis due to ageism biases. MARI Kids focuses on these issues and equips families with resources to become stronger advocates for their children.

What Do We Do?

MARI Kids conducts and publishes research focused on gaps and errors in pediatric diagnosis and treatment. We conduct research on possible topics such as:

  • Misdiagnosis of behavioural conditions in early childhood such as autism or ADHD
  • The impact of caregiver advocacy on health outcomes of children in the healthcare system
  • Pediatric medication safety and associated risk with outpatient prescriptions
  • Risk of being caregivers being miseducated regarding the usage of vaccines in early childhood

Why It Matters

Children are among the most medically vulnerable populations in our society. Something that may seem small to adults such as an overlooked symptom, can have lifelong impacts on children. MARI Kids works to ensure no child is overlooked and that parents and guardians are confident, informed participants in their child’s health journey. Children can not yet be strong advocates for themselves so MARI Kids makes the task easier on their caregivers by providing them with readily available evidence-based research.
