A division of the Misdiagnosis Association and Research Institute (MARI)
What is MARI Senior?
MARI Senior is a branch of the Misdiagnosis Association and research institute (MARI), which is dedicated to the advancement of health equity, safety, education and high-quality care of seniors.
As our demographic of seniors is increasing we aim to provide research and bring awareness to age-related health issues and provide patient education that is useful to the senior population.
MARI Senior is a resource to provide seniors, caregivers, families and healthcare professionals with the information needed to feel more comfortable providing care and being an advocate.
What is Mismedicine?
Mismedicine is a broad, inclusive term coined by Dr. Pooya Beigi to describe any medical act, whether diagnostic, therapeutic, communicative, or systemic that results in harm, inefficiency, or a failure to meet the standard of care. Unlike narrower terms such as misdiagnosis or malpractice, Mismedicine captures the full spectrum of medical errors, oversights, and institutional gaps that negatively impact patient outcomes.
In geriatric care, mismedicine often manifests through overlooked symptoms, ageist biases, overmedication (polypharmacy) and mismanagement of chronic conditions. It can also include neglect of mobility, nutrition, and mental health needs, or the dismissal of seniors’ concerns due to age-related bias. MARI Senior exists to uncover and address these systemic flaws, promoting safer and more respectful treatment of older adults across the healthcare spectrum.
What We Do?
At MARI Senior we produce research articles exploring different issues healthcare systems and professionals may encounter when caring for the senior population such as:
- Evidence-based interventions to decrease the risk of polypharmacy in the elderly population
- The role of family caregiver in preventing occurrences of mismedicine at all points of care
- How ageism impacts diagnosis and subsequent care in the senior population
Join the Movement
We’re always seeking passionate volunteers:
